From the box: Like all insects, the adult butterfly has three major body parts; the head, the thorax and the abdomen. The head supports the feeding and sensory structures. On its top are the paired, clubbed antennae. These are for sensing odors and movement. A butterfly has two large compound eyes. The mouthparts consist of the palpi between which the coiled proboscis rests. This is used to extract nectar or other liquids from flowers. The two pairs of wings project from the thorax along with three pairs of legs. Wing patterns are used to attract mates, to mislead predators, or to help maintain body teperature. The abdomen contains most of the internal organs. Butterflies undergo complete metamorphosis: egg, caterpillar (or lava), chrysalis (or pupa) and adult.
